DSL is a family of digital
telecommunications protocols designed to allow high speed data communication
over the existing copper telephone lines between end-users and telephone
companies. DSL is a technology for bringing high-bandwidth information to homes
and small businesses over ordinary copper telephone lines. xDSL refers to
different variations of DSL, such as ADSL, HDSL, SDSL and VDSL. DSL stands
for digital subscriber line; it refers to the type of broadband connection that
brings information to homes and businesses over ordinary copper telephone lines.
A DSL circuit is much faster than a regular phone connection, and the wires
coming into the subscriber’s premises are the same (copper) wires used for
regular phone service. A DSL circuit must be configured to connect two specific
locations, similar to a leased line.
DSL technologies use sophisticated modulation schemes to pack data onto copper
wires. DSL delivers high bandwidth over conventional copper wiring (such
as telephone lines) at limited distances. There are many types of DSL: ADSL,
HDSL, IDSL, SDSL, and VDSL. All are provisioned through modem pairs, with one
modem located at a central office and the other at the remote or customer site.
Because most DSL technologies do not use the whole bandwidth of the twisted
