FAQ on Frequency Hopping and Direct Sequencing

1. Can both FH and DS systems coexist within the same airspace?

Yes, if proper cell planning and RF engineering guidelines are adhered to. Total available bandwidth / throughput in the space will be shared by all systems operating within the same available spectrum.

2. Will existing 802.11b (DS) cards and Open Air (FH) cards work at multiple locations?

A wireless PC card from one manufacturer is capable of "talking" to an access point from another manufacturer, if all components involved comply with the same recognized industry standard, such as 802.11b.

3. Which card would provide the fastest connection?

A Star:DS card is faster, rated up to 11 Mbps. Star:FH cards are rated up to 1.6 Mbps.

4. What could adversely affect the communication of either system.

Any other device radiating energy in the same frequency band, such as microwave ovens, other access points in close proximity, etc. MobileStar designs its network to eliminate these problems whenever possible.

5. Is one system more expensive than the other?

DS hardware is slightly more expensive than FH at this time. But at a "megabits transferred per dollar" level, DS is less costly than FH.
