FEATURES
  • The FOM-40 Fiber Optic Modem, provides a long range (up to 110 km / 68 miles), and a secure data link between computers, routers, multiplexers and other data communication devices. It operates at twelve selectable synchronous data rates from 56 kbps to 2048 kbps.
  • FOM-40 converts electrical signals from DTE equipment into optical signals via an infrared light emitting diode or laser diode. At the opposite end of the fiber, the optical signals are converted back into electrical signals, in compliance with the appropriate interface.
  • The following DTE interfaces are available:
    • V.24/RS-232
    • V.35
    • X.21
    • RS-530
    • V.36 (RS-449)
    • G.703 Co-directional (64 kbps)
    • Ethernet.
  • FOM-40 is designed to operate with several grades and sizes of fiber optic cable. Two different optical interfaces are available:
    • 850 nm for use with multimode fibers
    • 1300 nm for use with single mode fibers
    • 1550 nm for use with single mode fibers.

Note: A laser diode option is available for extended range of up to 110 km / 68 miles.
 

  • Immunity is provided against electrical interference, such as EMI, RFI, spikes and differential ground loops. Protection is provided against sparking and lightning and a secure link is maintained in hazardous or hostile environments.
  • Three clocking modes are provided for maximum flexibility: Internal clock, Receive Loopback clock and External DTE clock.
  • FOM-40 utilizes a Phase Locked Loop (PLL) circuit to recover jitter-free data and clock from the optical signal.
  • V.54 diagnostics are used for local analog and digital loopbacks, and remote digital loopback. The loopback commands are controlled either by a manual switch, or via the DTE interface signals. A front panel switch generates an internal pseudo-random test pattern (511 bits) according to ITU V.52 standard, for testing end-to-end connectivity. An ERROR LED flashes whenever a bit error is detected.
  • FOM-40 is available either as a standalone unit (1U, 1.75" in height) or it is available as a card version for the ASM-MN-214 rack, which can accommodate up to 14 cards. A special hardware ordering option (RM-9) is available for mounting one or two standalone units side-by-side in a 19" rack.
